Dr. Ramakanta Panda

Dr. Ramakanta Panda is one of India's leading cardiac surgeons, and the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Asian Heart Institute, a renowned cardiac care hospital under the aegis of Asian Hospitals, at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai, India. A globally-reputed cardiac surgeon with impeccable credentials, Dr. Panda has, over the course of a career spanning nearly 30 years in the US and in India, performed over 15,000 cardiac surgeries including bypass, complex aortic aneurysms and valve repair and replacement and over 900 redo bypass surgeries. He is also credited with having performed more than 1800 high risk surgeries, otherwise considered 'inoperable' and is reputed to be one of the safest heart surgeons in the world, with a 99.5% success rate in bypass surgery.

In January 2009, Dr. Panda led the AHI team[1] that operated on[2] Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India. This successful 'redo bypass', the second for Dr. Singh, further cemented Dr. Panda's reputation as one of India's leading cardiac surgeons.

Recognition

Dr Panda has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in January 2010 by the President of India. The Padma Bhushan is India's third highest civilian award, awarded to recognize distinguished service of a high order to the Indian nation, in any field.

Educational Background

Dr. Panda trained in cardiac surgery from AIIMS, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He completed his fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, USA.

Dr. Panda has also worked for one year as Sr. Registrar at the Harefield Hospital, in the United Kingdom, where he had the opportunity to train under Professor Magdi Yacoub, considered to be one of the foremost cardiac surgeons in the world.

Pioneering Professional Experience

Dr. Panda is credited and recognized amongst his peers as being among the first surgeons in India to introduce the concept of 'total arterial revascularization', as well as being one of the pioneers of "off-pump" bypass surgery and redo bypass surgery in high risk surgeries.
